Portal (through Wine)

Just got Portal to work on my main computer which runs Ubuntu 7.10 x64. The trick was to download Portal.FIX-Unleashed and replace SteamEmu.ini! The Wine version (0.9.46) in the official repository worked great, even though it's a bit outdated. The steps I had to take was:
  • Install msttcorefonts package
  • Start it this way: wine hl2.exe -game portal -windowed -w 1024 -h 768 -dxlevel 80 -novid
The game is pretty mind blowing and great fun. The developers have a good sense of humor and the crazy computer that guides you, or do not guide you makes you laugh a lot of times. This is a must play game for everyone, and it should not be a problem to get through either since it is quite short. I used 2-3 hours.

Weekend recap

  • Got home from CUGtech, where I learned a lot and had great fun. Thanks to sponsors, speakers and participants.
  • Attended my friend Kim's birthday party, where an old friend decided to show up. Nice to see you again Tor-André!
  • Ate the first Christmas dinner this year at my GF's mothers place. Good food!
  • Installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my Playstation 3. Installation went a lot smoother than my attempt at 7.04. It works great for OpenOffice and Firefox even though it only has 256MB memory and swaps a little to the disk. Swap partition on a fast memory card would probably help a bit. Two tips to others who want to try: Install using the Alternative install disc. And set higher resolution as a kernel boot flag (like video=ps3fb:mode:8), changing it while running with ps3videomode would only garble my display.

Yesterday

Made a Vista VMWare image with Nero MediaHome to get video from my Ubuntu fileserver to my PS3. Due to lack of good DNLA/PNP servers for GNU/Linux / Ubuntu. Didn't get to test it though, as ZWT creates Windows(!) keygens to go with it's Linux releases. The release I'm talking about is: VMware.Workstation.v6.0.0.45731.Linux.x64.Incl.Keymaker-ZWT , well - I'll try to get WINE to run it for me today. Also flashed Eirik's PSP from FW 2.71 to 3.40 OE-A. I'm sure he wants to thank Dark_AleX and the others over at pspupdates.qj.net
